Aston Villa’s unbeaten run containing five wins in their last six matches came to end on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten 2-0 by Nottingham Forest.
Unai Emery’s side remain fifth placed in the Premier League despite the loss, and only sit two points behind the top four currently as they push for a potential place in next season’s Champions League.
Villa do have a highly impressive record at Villa Park, winning 12 of their 13 home matches in all competitions since the start of March, and head into Thursday’s game having won their last four.
The West Midlands side’s current European campaign seems to be gaining momentum after losing their opening match 3-2 away at Legia Warsaw, their first group game in a European competition in 15 years.
The Villans earned a late victory in their home game against Zrinjski Mostar in their second match to get their first points on the board before winning 4-1 in Alkmaar a fortnight ago to ensure they take six points from their opening three matches.
All four teams are currently separated by three points in Group E, with Villa currently sit in the table, only behind Legia Warsaw on head-to-head points.
Aston Villa ended AZ Alkmaar’s six match unbeaten run which included five wins when they made the trip to the Netherlands a fortnight ago.
Pascal Jansen’s side have played just once since that meeting, drawing 1-1 away at Excelsior which meant they lost ground on Eredivisie leaders PSV, whom they now trail by five points, and also fell down to third behind Feyenoord in the process.
Nicknamed the Cheesefarmers, Alkmaar have lost just twice in all competitions this season, both coming in the Europa Conference League.
The Dutch side have won seven of their last nine matches away from home in all competitions, but will have their work cut out for them against a confident Aston Villa side who have made their home ground something of a fortress.
