Agbonlahor: Aston Villa may be ready to rip up Coutinho contract after major reveal

Aston Villa may be ready to tear up Philippe Coutinho’s contract when he returns to full fitness, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested Unai Emery may have strengthened his attacking options before Coutinho is ready to play again.

The 30-year-old missed Emery’s first game in chance on Sunday (6 November) as Aston Villa beat Man United 3-1 at home.

The new manager revealed after the game that he will not feature before the World Cup break after suffering a quad injury in training.

The Daily Mail reported on Monday (6 November) the issue could keep him out for 10 weeks with a seven-week absence the best-case scenario.

“I think when he’s back fit he’ll be given a chance, the manager will want to give him a chance,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“But by the time he’s fit, it might be the case that the manager has brought in a few new players in January and he’s not needed.

“It could be a case of this hasn’t worked for Coutinho and they relieve him of his contract.

“He wouldn’t have got called up for the Brazil squad anyway. He’s nowhere near good enough to get in that Brazil squad.

“It’s a wake-up call for him. He needs to get fit and get his injury sorted or he could be one of the players that it is time to move to MLS.”

Coutinho signed from Aston Villa, initially on loan, under Steven Gerrard in the January transfer window.

After scoring four goals and providing three assists in his first eight appearances, he has found the net just once since.
