Agbonlahor: Gerrard potentially facing Aston Villa dismissal after latest

Steven Gerrard will know his job at Aston Villa is still not secure, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted the 1-1 draw with Man City last weekend (3 September) has given Gerrard “another week”.

The 42-year-old was under real pressure before the visit of the Premier League champions after Villa lost four of their opening five games.

Sources told Football Insider last month (29 August) that the club’s ambitious owners won’t hesitate to sack him if results do not improve.

They were admirers of Graham Potter who has left Brighton to join Chelsea as well as Mauricio Pochettino who is out of work after leaving Paris Saint-Germain over the summer.

Aston Villa were due to face Leicester City at the weekend (10 September) before the fixture was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Agbonlahor claimed it was a “must-not-lose” game fore both managers.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “What’s funny about it, since that performance at the weekend, Gerrard‘s name has not been mentioned on TV or on the radio.

“That’s the funny thing about football, there’s another target like Thomas Tuchel and other managers.

“It just shows that one performance of togetherness, work rate and players listening to tactics can change so much. If Villa had lost 4-0 there would have been so much pressure this week.

“But he’s given himself another week. Leicester would have been a must-not-lose game for both managers.”

Aston Villa’s next scheduled game is with Southampton later this month (18 September).

The Midlands giants currently sit 17th in the Premier League table and are only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.
