Agbonlahor wants McGinn further forward

John McGinn is “wasted” in a deep midfield role and should be played further forward at Aston Villa, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted the Scotland international has all the attributes to play in the number 10 role.

The 26-year-old was pushed further forward for the first time this season at the weekend as Villa looked for a way to win without their captain Jack Grealish.

While they beat Fulham 3-1, the game changed with the introduction of Keinan Davis as Villa played with two strikers.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Dean Smith insisted one of his options without Grealish was to push McGinn further forward.

Asked whether he agreed with Smith’s assessment of McGinn, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I actually do, you know.

“He’s wasted further back.

“His attributes, he’s got a great left-foot shot on him, he’s got a great forward pass, he can run with the ball. I think definitely being further forward would suit him.

“He can play anywhere, he can play in the hole, he can play as a number 10, as a number eight going forward a bit more.

“It’s definitely something that I think will benefit him.

“He showed it with Scotland with the number of goals he’s been getting recently.”

McGinn has scored just once in the Premier League this season but found the net three times in three games while on international duty recently.

He scored a late equaliser in Scotland’s 2-2 draw with Austria before netting a brace in their 4-0 win over the Faroe Islands.

In other news, Aston Villa have made a move to sign a Championship sensation after he rejected a new deal.
