Callum Chambers’ move to Aston Villa was a “shock” to the system – and they deserve credit for completing the deal so quietly.
That is the view of ex-Villa defender Alan Hutton, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the manner of the 27-year-old’s Arsenal exit.
Villa confirmed on 27 January that Chambers had signed from the Gunners on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
The Athletic reported last Monday (31 January) that Arsenal did not activate a clause that would have extended his deal by a year before he left the club.
The clause is understood to have expired in December last year.
Chambers had just six months remaining on his contract at the Emirates at the beginning of January, which helped smooth the path towards his exit.
Hutton saluted Villa for the fashion in which they pulled off the deal.
“They have been one of the best in terms of their overall window,” he told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“They have identified who they wanted and gone out and got the business done quietly. There hasn’t been a big noise about it.
“The Chambers one, I don’t think anyone saw that coming. It was a total shock.
“It was an area that Gerrard felt he needed some depth. He can play in various different positions.
“He can do a job at full-back, centre-half etcetera. He’s very versatile and a good age too.
“He will want to kick on and show he has what it takes to be a regular starter.”
Chambers turned out 122 times for Arsenal after he signed from Southampton in 2014.
He could make his Villa debut against Leeds United on Wednesday (9 February).
