Archer tipped to complete Aston Villa summer exit after talks begin – expert

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Cameron Archer to go out on loan again in the 2023-24 campaign or risk becoming a “bit-part player” at Aston Villa.

The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested his former side will be in the market for another striker this summer – reducing the 21-year-old’s opportunities even further.

According to journalist Alan Nixon (via Patreon, 28 May), Middlesbrough have already made contact with Aston Villa about the possibility of bringing Archer back to the club on loan next season.

The England Under-21 star notched 11 goals in 20 appearances for Michael Carrick’s side in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign – a year after notching seven strikes in a similar spell at Preston.

Archer penned a fresh five-year contract at Aston Villa last August but has struggled to make an impression for the Midlands giants.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I hope he can make an impact at Villa.

“I watched him at Middlesbrough and he was very sharp.

“But it comes down to what he wants as a player. Does he want to play now and then in the cups? The Conference League will be a big competition for Villa, and I can’t see him getting much time in it.

“Do you want to be a bit-part player or do you want to play every week in the Championship? It’s a hard choice for Archer.

“At his age, I’d want to be starting every week. I’d want to go on loan and enjoy my football.

“I still think Aston Villa will get another striker.”
