Aston Villa 2 Wolves 3: Ruben Neves nets last-second winner after three in last ten minutes sees incredible comeback

RUBEN Neves completed an incredible Wolves fightback as Bruno Lage’s side destroyed Aston Villa with three goals in the final 15 minutes.

Villa looked in complete control as they cruised into a two-goal second-half lead – with John McGinn their driving force.

But then Dean Smith’s side simply collapsed as their defence crumbled against a Wolves side who had hardly threatened until the 79th minute.

When Romain Saiss pulled one back after converting a Daniel Podence cross from a pinpoint Neves pass, there was little sign of what was to come.

The goal brought Wolves back to life and they grabbed an 85th-minute equaliser.

Max Kilman almost took the honours when he headed against the crossbar.

But Villa failed to clear their lines and – in the scramble that followed – England defender Conor Coady scrambled the ball across the line with Axel Tuanzebe unable to stop it.

Skipper Coady punched the air as he whipped up the travelling fans and urged one more effort.

And Wolves produced it four minutes into stoppage time.

Adama Traore, who had a frustrating afternoon, won a free-kick 20 yards from goal.

And when Neves stepped up to take it, his shot took a deflection off Villa defender Matt Targett and bounced into the net.

Wolves’ players celebrated with their ecstatic fans as Villa boss Smith looked furious.

It was embarrassing from Villa who, until then, had been in control.

McGinn had been on fire as he created the opening goal for Danny Ings who headed home for his first goal in six games just three minutes after the break.

And then McGinn grabbed Villa’s second as he netted with a shot that took a vicious deflection off Neves.

Ings’ goal meant that since his debut in the competition in August 2014, he has scored 58 goals in the Premier League – and the only Englishmen with more in this period are Harry Kane (163), Jamie Vardy (124) and Raheem Sterling (85).

But that will matter little after a finale to remember for Wolves.
