Aston Villa could seal ‘cheap’ Helander deal after source’s update – Campbell

Kevin Campbell has tipped Aston Villa to seal “a cheap deal” for Rangers defender Filip Helander in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker suggested Steven Gerrard “knows and trusts” the 28-year-old from his time in charge at Ibrox.

The Claret and Blues are in the market for a left-sided centre-half when the transfer window re-opens.

As revealed by this site (18 April), Gerrard has been unconvinced by club captain Tyrone Mings since his appointment in November.

A Villa source told Football Insider (19 April) that the club are interested in Helander and are closely monitoring his situation in Glasgow.

Gerrard is a big admirer of the Sweden international but does have concerns over his injury record.

Helander is fast approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox.

When asked for his assessment of Villa’s interest in Helander, Campbell told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:

“Listen, it was only every going to be a matter of time before Steven Gerrard goes back to Rangers for a player.

“Why would he not want to bring in somebody who he knows and trusts?

“Gerrard sees that area of the team as lacking and he is thinking, ‘I know someone who can plug that gap and I can get a deal done for cheap.’ That is why I can see that one getting done in the summer.”
