Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Steven Gerrard needs to bring in a specialist defensive coach for Aston Villa.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Ezri Kona and Tyrone Mings need help and should be more “physical” with the opposition.
Gerrard’s side have not kept a clean sheet since the 3-0 win over a poor Leeds United side last month (10 March).
They shipped four against Tottenham last weekend (9 April) who had just five shots on target, according to the BBC.
“The difference between Aston Villa and Tottenham was the defending,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.
“It should not be that easy to score goals and every goal Spurs scored was easy to score. It was very poor defending.
“But you have to look back at last season, Konsa and Mings were one of the best centre-back partnerships in the league, they didn’t concede many goals. This season, Villa have looked very easy to play against.
“They probably need a defensive coach who can help the defenders. Watching the games recently, it’s been very easy for players to hold the ball up, very easy for them to win headers. Konsa should not be letting Harry Kane win headers.
“We need to be more physical with the opposition. When a Villa striker gets the ball, they’re pushed in the back and thrown around but when the opposition gets the ball, it’s very easy to hold the ball up and turn.
“I’m happy with the personnel, they’ve got credit in the bank. They just need more help and a bit more coaching.”
