Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Aston Villa ace Jacob Ramsey should have been handed his first England call-up following an impressive 2022-23 campaign.
The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed “it just doesn’t make sense” to see Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in the squad ahead of the 22-year-old.
Villa talent Ramsey missed out on a senior England call-up for June’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia – and will instead be part of the Under-21 side.
Gareth Southgate instead selected Chelsea’s Gallagher and Man City’s Kalvin Phillips, among other names.
Ramsey, who has already racked up 91 career Premier League games, notched six goals and eight assists in 38 games across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign.
He won the Premier League’s Academy Graduate award for this term, following the likes of Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The Birmingham-born ace has scored two goals in nine appearances for England’s Under-21s and will play in this summer’s European Championships.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Ramsey, Gibbs-White – these players can play in a similar role to Gallagher.
“Gallagher hasn’t scored many goals this season, he’s got three. Zero goal contributions in the Champions League.
“It just doesn’t make sense why he’s in the squad. He’s got a good engine, but this is Malta and Macedonia – England can experiment.
“Ramsey is the first name on the teamsheet for the Under-21s, why not reward him?
“He’s playing week-in, week-out in the Premier League and scoring goals.”
