Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez would be “excited” at the prospect of joining Man United.
That’s according to former Villains boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about where the stopper’s future lies.
On 26 September, this site revealed Martinez, 30, is on the radar of the Premier League giants with David de Gea out of contract next summer.
However, on Thursday (29 October), sources told Football Insider that Villa will knock back all offers for their number one in the winter window.
Steven Gerrard regards the former Arsenal man as an “untouchable” in his line-up and has started him in all bar one Premier League match – when he had a knee injury – since he took charge at Villa Park.
McLeish insists Martinez would be open to a move to Old Trafford.
“I think he would be very excited about moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“Man United have probably had him in their black book for a long, long time. De Gea has been at Man United for so long now, I was thinking. ‘I can’t believe he had been there that long’.
“I was seeing him playing with Giggs and people like that. You definitely have to think about a new goalkeeper.
“De Gea has been fantastic so to follow in his footsteps will be big shoes to fill.”
Aston Villa face Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday (2 October).
The Villains are looking to record back-to-back victories for the first time this season after defeating Southampton in their last outing (16 September).
