Gabby Agbonlahor believes Harvey Barnes should be the “top target” for Aston Villa in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa striker claimed Leicester’s relegation to the Championship should allow Barnes, 25, to be signed for a cheaper fee – which could be as low as £40million.
According to The Independent (24 May), Aston Villa are leading the chase to sign Barnes as Leicester face an exodus of their best players.
Sources told this site earlier this month (6 May) that ten Foxes stars were set to quit in the event of relegation.
Football Insider revealed last month (13 April) that Newcastle and Tottenham are also interested in England international Barnes.
The 25-year-old scored the opener in the Foxes’ 2-1 win over West Ham in the final match of the 2022-23 campaign, but the three points were unable to save Leicester from the drop due to Everton’s 1-0 win over Bournemouth.
Barnes, who is out of contract in June 2025, notched 13 goals and three assists in 40 games this term.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I would make Barnes the top target.
“Aston Villa aren’t blessed with wingers. Bertrand Traore is just okay, Leon Bailey has been inconsistent.
“Barnes has got so much potential. He gives you the direct option of pace and running at defenders.
“I’d definitely sign him, and with Leicester going down – you can get him for a cut-price fee. Hopefully it will cost under £40million.“
