Gabby Agbonlahor has backed Aston Villa to seal a cut-price deal for Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu this summer if the Saints are relegated to the Championship.
The former Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old could “shine” in a better team if he moves on at the end of the season.
Sources told this site on Thursday (23 March) that Aston Villa are plotting to sign Southampton defender Salisu this summer.
It is believed that Leicester City and Man United are also keen on signing the Ghana international, who will have 12 months remaining on his contract at the end of the season.
Salisu has started 21 of a possible 28 Premier League games for bottom club Southampton this season as Ruben Selles’ side inch closer to the drop.
The centre-back is one of a number of stars who could leave St Mary’s Stadium in the event of relegation – with James Ward-Prowse, Romeo Lavia and Kyle Walker-Peters among those attracting interest.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “Just because a team is in relegation trouble doesn’t mean the whole squad is rubbish.
“Southampton have got some good players, and Salisu is one of four or five that will be in demand this summer.

“If they are relegated, there’s also the possibility of doing an even cheaper deal. It’s worth looking at.”
