Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has told Jacob Ramsey he will have a key first team role this season, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Midlands giants spent over £75million on new players during another summer window of huge investment in their playing squad.

But Smith also intends to make full use of the best young players who have graduated from the club’s youth ranks.

A Villa source has told Football Insider he regards Ramsey, 19, as a special talent and plans to gradually phase him into the team.

As revealed by this site yesterday, the club knocked back multiple offers from Championship clubs keen to take the teenager on loan this season.

Smith blocked Ramsey’s exit and made it clear he sees him as a part of his first-team plans for this season.

That is quite some backing given the army of talent at the manager’s disposal, and with the competition for midfield places intensified by the loan capture of Ross Barkley from Chelsea.

Ramsey is a versatile midfielder who can operate centrally as well as in more advanced roles.

He was handed a new three-and-a-half year contract in January of this year by Villa before being loaned to Doncaster Rovers, where he made a strong impression before the lockdown in March.

The England Under-20 international served notice of his potential with three goals in just seven matches for the League One outfit.

The teenager made his senior debut in 2018-19 for Villa and has seven appearances for the club under his belt.

He has played four times this season, starting all three of the club’s League Cup matches and also coming off the bench in their Premier League win over Fulham.
