Aston Villa may have Archer problem after confirmed news – Agbonlahor

Cameron Archer will cause Steven Gerrard a headache this season as he pushes for a place in the Aston Villa starting XI, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer delivered his verdict after it was confirmed Archer will stay at Villa Park for the 2022-23 campaign.

As quoted by Birmingham Live last week (1 August), Gerrard confirmed that the 20-year-old will not leave on loan during the transfer window.

His progress was rewarded with a new five-year contract that was confirmed by Villa on Friday (5 August).

“You can see what can happen with young players like Archer,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“All it takes is Aston Villa to be losing 1-0, Archer comes on in the 70th minute, scores an equaliser and has a worldy of a 20 minutes.

“The next game, the manager has a decision to make, do you stick with the players that you’ve got or do you bring Archer in?

“I think heā€™s going to be that headache for Steven Gerrard this season.

“Heā€™s going to prove that heā€™s good enough to start then itā€™s going to make it a hard decision for Steven Gerrard.

“Thatā€™s what you want, a young hungry player whoā€™s good enough. You donā€™t want a young, hungry player whoā€™s not really good enough and youā€™re just keeping him around the first team because you want to keep young players.

“You want ones that are good enough and Archer has shown that heā€™s got potential to be good enough.

“Itā€™s definitely the right decision. If youā€™re not looking at any other strikers in the transfer window, having three strikers is perfect to have around the first team.”
