Aston Villa news: Alex Bruce reacts to talks over Smith future

Alex Bruce insists it would be “harsh” if Aston Villa were to sack manager Dean Smith before the end of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former defender and son of ex-Villa boss Steve Bruce has lauded the 49-year-old for the job he has done since taking charge.

As revealed by Football Insider, Villa chiefs have considered the possibility of sacking Smith with six games left to play this season.

The Villans currently sit 18th in the Premier League table, with Bournemouth’s 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday lifting them a place on goals scored.

Bruce admits that managers have been sacked in similar situations to Smith but insists he does not think it would be the right call from club officials.

Asked if it was harsh for the club to be considering sacking Smith, Bruce told Football Insider: “Yes, I do. I think he’s done a good job, obviously he took over from Dad and he took the bull by the horns.

“He filled the hole that I know my Dad was trying to fill, unfortunately, the transfer window closed in time for the new owners to come in, to get Tyrone Mings through the door.

“Once he got Tyrone Mings through the door, it filled a big gap at the back and they went on to achieve promotion which was very good on his part.

“To get them in the Premier League and then lose your job because they’re having a sticky time, it was never going to be easy. It would be harsh but, unfortunately, football side of things it’s a harsh industry and if they do make a change, we’ll have seen it all before.”

Villa have drawn two and lost two of their games since the restart of the Premier League.

Their next two games see them take on newly-crowned champions Liverpool and an in-form Manchester United side.
