Aston Villa news: Brown reacts to crunch talks over Smith

Michael Brown has urged the Aston Villa board to keep faith with manager Dean Smith despite their recent poor run of form.

The former Premier League midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the club’s “ridiculous” injury record has done the Villa boss no favours in their fight against relegation.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday, club chiefs have discussed the possibility of sacking Smith after the 1-0 defeat to Wolves last weekend.

Smith has had to make do without two of the club’s big summer signings – Tom Heaton and Wesley Moraes – since the start of 2020 due to their season-ending injury blows.

Brown believes the Villans’ missing men have been a huge miss and that the Villa board would be wrong to get rid of Smith with six games left to play.

Asked if there was any point Villa changing manager, Brown told Football Insider: “You always think that could happen because of staying in the league, can you get that reaction? That’s no different at any football club – where do you make that decision?

“That’s not going to change. He’s done a great job to get them where they are, there’s a lot of money spent and I think you’ve got to say their injuries have been ridiculous for what they’ve had to go through.

“I think give him a bit more time, he’s got difficult fixtures coming up – they’ve got games right until the end where you feel they can get the results, it’s going to be tough for them. He’s got some credit from me, Dean Smith, regarding how he took them on so quick.”

Villa currently sit 19th in the Premier League table, although only goal difference separates them from 17th places West Ham.

The club’s next couple of games sees them take on two of the league’s most in-form sides in Liverpool and Manchester United.

In other news, it can be REVEALED that Wolves have opened talks to sign Aston Villa star.
