Aston Villa news: Bruce blown away by Davis display v Sheff Utd

Alex Bruce admits he was blown away by the performance of Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis after he made his first Premier League start against Sheffield United.

The former Premier League defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims that Dean Smith has got a real gem on his hands after what he saw in Wednesday’s 0-0 draw.

The 22-year-old, who has made eight substitute appearances this season, was chosen ahead of Aly Samatta to lead the line at Villa Park.

Despite the game ending in a stalemate, Bruce was left head over heels with what he saw from Davis up front.

“I thought the shining light for Aston Villa, I was really impressed with Keinan Davis,” Bruce told Football Insider.

“I know my dad thought a lot of him when he had him at Aston Villa and I think he might have given him his chance in the first team but I thought he looked a real handful, I think he was unlucky.

“He probably should have done a bit better with some of his chances but he gave the Sheffield United defence a real handful. I thought he was the real shining light and he could be a really important player for them.”

Davis made the first of his 58 Villa appearances back in 2017 under Steve Bruce, with the current Newcastle boss using his regularly during the 2017/18 season.

He has four goals and five assists to his name so far, while he has also played for the England under-20s.
