Alex Bruce has been left head over heels for Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings after he helped keep a clean sheet against Sheffield United.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League centre-back called the 27-year-old a “Rolls Royce of a defender” after his return to action on Wednesday night.
Mings lined up alongside Kortney Hause at the heart of the defence at Villa Park and managed to keep the likes of Oli McBurnie and Billy Sharp quiet for large parts of the game.
Bruce claims that the Villans’ defensive displays could be the difference between survival and relegation from the Premier League this season and that he was impressed with what he saw in their first game back.
Bruce told Football Insider: “I like Tyrone Mings, I think he’s a Rolls Royce of a defender, it looks like he never breaks a sweat really.
“I was impressed with Hause as well, next to him – a big, powerful lad. If they’re going to do anything this season in terms of avoiding the drop, defensively they’re going to need to be sound and they’re going to need their goalkeeper to stop dropping the ball over the line.”
Mings has played 27 times across all competitions for the Villans this season and has a total of 46 appearances under his belt for the club.
Villa’s next game sees them welcome Chelsea to Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.
