Aston Villa news: Bruce reacts to O'Hare contract snub

Alex Bruce admits he admires Aston Villa attacking midfielder Callum O’Hare for turning down a new contract offer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Northern Ireland defender believes the 22-year-old is making the right decision in choosing to leave Villa Park in search of first-team football.

As revealed by Football InsiderO’Hare, whose current deal runs out this summer, has turned down numerous offers from the Villans and looks set to leave for a compensation fee.

Bruce insists that O’Hare is doing the right thing by seeking a move which would guarantee first-team football, admitting he found himself in the same situation during his career.

Bruce told Football Insider: “You have to admire the kid, he obviously wants to go and play football, he might see his progression a little bit blocked in terms of getting into Aston Villa’s team.

“He’s obviously got a taste of first-team football while he’s been out on loan and he doesn’t want to give that up, which I understand. When I was that age and I went out on loan, the one thing I didn’t want to do was go back to a bigger club and sit on a bench or play in the reserves.

“You want to keep playing.”

O’Hare has played just nine times for Villa since coming through the club’s youth ranks.

However, he has been a regular at Coventry this season, with four goals and seven assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
