Aston Villa news: Hutton delivers verdict after crunch Smith talks

Alan Hutton insists it would be a “terrible” decision for Aston Villa to sack Dean Smith despite their struggles at the bottom of the Premier League table.

The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggests all his old side can do right now is fight for their place among England’s elite.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday, Smith’s position as manager of Villa is on a knife edge following their defeat to Wolves.

He had previously been on the brink shortly before the lockdown in mid-March.

The Villans currently sit 19th in the table, with only goal difference separating them and West Ham in 17th right now.

Hutton believes a change of manager would have little to no effect at Villa Park and that the board should keep fair with his former boss.

“I think there’s always pressure,” Hutton told Football Insider.

“If you’re a Premier League manager and the team’s not doing the way you want them to do – I mean they spent £140million in the summer and they’re second bottom of the league, time’s running out – there’s always pressure on you.

“I believe he is building something and at the moment he is the right man for the job. I know some people might look at it and say they can’t be as they’re down the bottom but I’ve worked with him, I know the way he is.

“He’s a great man-management kind of person, he knows the style of football he wants to play, it’s just about it clicking on the day. It can get difficult in the last 10 games of the season where the nerves are there, you’re jittery and you’re not putting out the performances you want.

“I think it would be a terrible time to bring in somebody else. With six games to go, even if you did bring in the best manager in the world, how are you turning that round?

“At the moment, it’s just about the fight – fight hard, get as many points on the board as you can, it’s very tight at the bottom, claw your way out of it and look to next season.”

In other news, it can be REVEALED that Wolves have opened talks to sign Aston Villa star.
