Alan Hutton has revealed that Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn is “frustrated” with his fitness levels since returning from injury.
The former Villa and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has lifted the lid on conversations he has had with his old teammate.
McGinn has started six of Villa’s seven games since the Premier League restart after he missed 10 matches due to a broken ankle suffered in December.
Hutton insists that McGinn was never going to hit his former heights straight after his comeback and has revealed his fellow countryman has been voicing his frustrations.
Hutton told Football Insider: “Look, it’s one of those things, he’s been out for so long, we all know how good he is and what he can give the team.
“Obviously having conversations with him myself, I’ve been there before, been out for a long time, it’s just doesn’t come back to you, it takes a little while and of course he’ll be frustrated.
“He knows how good he can be, he’ll want to give his all for the team, he’s that type of boy but look, he keeps fighting, he works as hard as possible, he trains hard and he’ll be looking to get up to top speed as soon as possible.
“He’s getting there game by game, he’s getting better, obviously there’s only three games left so it’s going to be difficult but these are building blocks.”
McGinn has made a total of 27 appearances across all competitions this season for Villa, with 25 of those coming in the Premier League.
The Villans, who currently sit 19th in the table and are four points off safety, play Everton, Arsenal and West Ham as their final three games.
