Alan Hutton has claimed Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry will not leave the club to become the new Bristol City boss.
The former Villa defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists his former teammate and coach will be a “fantastic manager” one day but that the Robins job might not be right for him.
As revealed by Football Insider, the 39-year-old is in the running to take over as manager at Ashton Gate after the departure of Lee Johnson over the weekend.
Hutton, who played alongside Terry during the latter’s final season as a player, believes his old defensive partner will want to take on a manager’s role but that Bristol City may not be for him.
Asked if he thought Terry would seriously consider the opportunity at the Robins, Hutton told Football Insider: “I’m not so sure – until he comes out and physically says it, I wouldn’t really believe it.
“He’s going to make a fantastic manager, I’ve obviously worked with him up close at Villa and seen how meticulous he is in certain aspects of the game, I know what kind of guy he is.
“Whether that’s the first one he would fancy, they are a decent side, mid-table in the Championship, I don’t know if that’s the first one he would want to take but he will want to step out on his own two feet at some point in the foreseeable future. Whether that’s the first one he’d choose, I’m not sure.”
Bristol City currently sit 12th in the Championship table, nine points off the play-off places.
Former boss Johnson was sacked after the club suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to sixth-placed Cardiff City on Saturday.
