Aston Villa news: Hutton reacts to Davis contract report

Alan Hutton claims that Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis has to prove himself in the senior side before he is handed a new deal by the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and Scotland defender insists that the centre-forward has what it takes to make the grade but that he is yet to demonstrate his full ability at Villa Park.

Football Insider revealed last month the Midlands giants have opened talks with the 22-year-old over a new long-term deal after triggering an optional one-year extension clause in his current deal that keeps him initially until 2021.

However, Hutton does not believe Villa will hand Davis a new deal straight away, suggesting that the club have thrown the gauntlet to the striker to first prove himself.

Hutton told Football Insider: “I’ve always been a fan, I’ve always said he’s definitely got the ability and he’s got what it takes to make it in the first-team, it’s just about staying fit.

“They’ve obviously signed a deal with a view to a longer one which is ‘Go and prove yourself’ in my eyes. It’s go and show us you want it and you’re hungry for it.

“He’s got everything that it takes, it’s just getting the time on the pitch. I think if he does, everyone will see how good he actually can be. He’s really going to have to work hard to get in the team because there are still a couple ahead of him.”

Davis has scored just once for Villa this season, having played a bit-part role for Dean Smith.

He has eight Premier League appearances under his belt, all of which have come from the substitutes’ bench.
