Aston Villa news: Hutton tips Chester to leave in summer

Alan Hutton believes that “unbelievable” Aston Villa defender James Chester will leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

The former Villa and Scotland full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 31-year-old is “too good” to be act as backup after slipping down the pecking order under Dean Smith.

The Wales international is out of contract this summer and has told the Athletic he is still in the dark as to where his future lies.

However, Hutton does not believe he will be at Villa Park past the summer, insisting that he needs to find somewhere to play regularly after a number of injury problems in recent years.

Hutton told Football Insider: “You would presume the rest of his career is going to lie somewhere other than Villa, even though he’s been a great servant, he was captain for years and he’s an unbelievable guy also.

“I think he’s too good for backup. He’s obviously had his problems throughout the season with his knees so it’s been difficult for him.

“To see him actually back finally playing after all that is brilliant, especially for himself. He won’t want to come back and just sit there after that feeling of playing again, he’ll want to play as many games as possible. It looks like it will be away from Villa.”

Chester, who made just one League Cup appearance in the first half of the season, joined Stoke City on loan in January and has played seven times for the Potters.

He has a total of 126 appearances under his belt for Villa, although his last league outing came back in January 2019.
