Aston Villa news: Mills incensed by VAR in Crystal Palace win

Danny Mills was incensed that Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish was not booked for what he saw as clear simulation against Crystal Palace yesterday.

The former Leeds United defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 24-year-old dived ‘dramatically’ and ‘theatrically’ to try and win a penalty.

Martin Atkinson awarded a penalty in the second half after Patrick van Aanholt was adjudged to have fouled Grealish.

But the replays showed that it was in fact the Englishman that committed the foul and the decision was overturned by VAR but the attacking midfielder received no punishment for what appeared to be a dive.

Mill was baffled that a yellow card was not brandished and questioned VAR official Jonathan Moss.

“A penalty has been given and you can understand why in real time but Grealish’s dive is dramatic and theatrical to say the least,” he told Football Insider.

“Then you see the replay and it is he that stood on van Aanholt’s foot. There is a pause and then he throws his arms up and throws himself up into the air.

“The penalty was overruled and rightly so but why was he not booked for simulation? That is what I do not understand.

“If you dive and try to win a penalty you should be booked. I do not get it.”

A goal either side of the incident from Trezeguet sealed a vital victory for Villa with all of their relegation rivals winning this weekend.

The Clare and Blue remain 19th, four points from safety.
