Aston Villa news: Terry considered for Bristol City job, McAvennie reacts

Frank McAvennie has tipped John Terry to go into management soon as the Aston Villa number two is considered for the vacant post at Bristol City.

However, the former Celtic and West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that the 39-year-old is not cut from the same cloth as Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Terry has been Dean Smith’s assistant at Villa Park since the latter was appointed manager in October 2018.

Football Insider revealed that the former Chelsea captain is in the frame for the newly-vacant role in what would be his first managerial position.

City sacked former gaffer Lee Johnson on Saturday after a run of four straight defeats ended hopes of reaching this season’s Play Offs.

When asked by Football Insider if Terry could be the ideal candidate to take the reins at Ashton Gate, McAvennie said:

“I think he is going to go into management soon. He has learned his trade now.

“I do not think he has the mindset of Franky Lampard or Stevie Gerrard, even though he came from that group. Centre-halves are not very clever!

“It would surprise me but he is doing well and learning at Aston Villa. He is improving everyday and the next step for him will be to get a managers job.

“However, some people prefer being a number two and do not want to be the number one. I do not know if John has got that in him. You could tell that Frank Lampard and Stevie Gerrard were going to.”
