Aston Villa news: Whelan blown away by Davis display

Noel Whelan admits he was blown away by the performance of Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis in the club’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield United.

The former Leeds and Middlesbrough hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the 22-year-old has got all the qualities and attributes to make a big name for himself in the future.

Davis made his first-ever Premier League start on Wednesday night, playing 69 minutes in the home clash against the Blades.

While he might not have got on the scoresheet, Whelan admits he saw enough from the young forward to know he is going to be a big player for the Villans.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Oh he is a handful, absolutely. He’s got power, pace, holds the ball up really well, very good in the air – not many centre-halves are going to want to come up against him.

“I can see why they chose him to start the game, absolutely. He’s got a big future at Aston Villa and in the game of football because he’s got every attribute you would want from a striker.

“Once he starts adding goals to his game, which I’m sure he will because his movement was very good as well – dropping off, running in behind, coming short – he’s got every trick in the book that you would want from a striker.

“Really good to see Dean Smith giving that young boy a chance – he didn’t let himself down or the manager.”

Davis had made eight substitute appearances in the Premier League prior to his first start, though he is yet to hit the back of the net in the top flight.

He has a total of 58 appearances, four goals and five assists under his belt since breaking into the senior side from the youth ranks.
