Aston Villa are set to beat Crystal Palace to the signing of Watford’s Ismaila Sarr, talkSPORT sources understand.
Steven Gerrard’s side have agreed a package worth more than £25million for the Senegalese winger who has told the Hornets that he wants to leave.
Sarr joined Watford for a club record £28.8m in 2019 from talent hotspot Rennes and quickly made an impression with five goals in 28 Premier League appearances.
Two of those efforts ended Liverpool’s unbeaten run on the way to their first league title in 30 years, with Sarr scoring twice in a 3-1 win.
The 24-year-old won the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal during the summer, scoring against Equatorial Guinea to progress to the semi-finals.
This season he’s already made headlines with a goal of the season contender for Watford, scoring from his own half against West Brom in a 1-1 draw.
Sarr will join a Villa side that have had back-to-back summers of big recruitment, but so far the results haven’t stacked up.
The Birmingham side have spent around £50m on Robin Olsen, Philippe Coutinho and Diego Carlos, with the latter out for an extended period after rupturing his Achilles tendon against Everton.
A hefty 3-1 defeat against Palace last time out leaves Villa with three points from their opening three games, and manager Gerrard in danger of losing his job.
The Liverpool legend became the bookies’ favourite as the next Premier League manager to be sacked in the wake of a performance he called ‘not good enough’.
Post-match the 42-year-old said: “The get-out is to say we don’t have enough in the building, but I have full belief in these players we can find this consistency.
“We had a huge setback this week in the heart of defence, which was well documented.
“In the coming days we will do everything we can to give the players more support. We want to move forward and are not satisfied with the inconsistency.”
