Aston Villa sign youngster Ben Chrisene for undisclosed fee

Aston Villa have secured the signing of Ben Chrisene from Exeter City, beating the likes of Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool to the exciting youngsters signature.

At sixteen, Chrisene holds the record initially set for the youngest player to appear for the Grecians that was previously held by fellow academy product Ethan Ampadu.

The 16-year-old, who can play as both a midfielder and a defender signs for an undisclosed fee and will move straight into the academy set-up. He could be the first of multiple products of St James Park – with both Ollie Watkins and Ampadu linked with moves to Villa Park this summer.

Academy manager Mark Harrison was pleased to have secured the services of Chrisene, stating:

“He’s a very talented youngster who we are very pleased to have at the club”

“I would like to thank the owners, board and CEO for their support in bringing talent like Ben’s to Aston Villa and for their ongoing backing in helping us to work towards our shared vision of a thriving and successful academy.”

The new signing joined the Exeter City academy at the age of 11, and has since been capped for England at under-15 and under-16 level.

Exeter’s manager, Matt Taylor has wished Ben the best with his move, but admits it is a shame that the club did not get to see more of him in a Grecian shirt.

“He’s gone to a Premier League club, which we are delighted about – but it is a shame we are losing our players before we really get a chance to work with them.”

It is key to note that the Exeter City President and Director of Football has praised our club for our ‘professional approach’ and ‘fairness’ during the deal.

Young players are often poached by larger clubs and the compensation is often less than what a player with significant potential would move for – the move from West Brom to Barcelona for Louie Barry can be used as an example.

“Whilst the fee is undisclosed, when a possible arbitration fee is considered we are pleased with the valuation”

“We would like to acknowledge that Aston Villa have been very professional and fair in their dealings with Exeter City.”
