Aston Villa star set for exit ‘now’ after £18.1m deal agreed – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed the big-money signing of Jhon Duran could mean the end of Cameron Archer’s time at Aston Villa.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a permanent move to the Championship for the 21-year-old may be “best for all parties”.

Aston Villa announced the signing of Duran, 19, from Chicago Fire on Monday (16 January) – with the deal subject to the starlet passing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The Athletic updated later that day to reveal that the Midlands giants will pay an initial £14.8million for the forward – with a further £3.3million due in performance-based add-ons.

The Colombia international notched eight goals and six assists in 30 games for Chicago Fire last season.

Archer has already been loaned out to Middlesbrough for the rest of the season after struggling to break through under Unai Emery.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Just because you get into the first team doesn’t mean you’re going to stay in the manager’s plans.

“Cameron Archer is out on loan, he might look at it himself and think that a permanent move is best for him.

“He needs to play week-in, week-out. As a young player, you don’t want to be coming off the bench every five games.

“If he has to go down to the Championship, then so be it. He can always get a move back to the Premier League or get promoted.

“I think it will be best for all parties now for him to go and puts roots down somewhere else. It’s very rare to play more than one up front these days, and he’s not the type of player who can be a lone striker.

“Signing Duran, I think it says that Emery doesn’t see a real future for Archer.”
