Aston Villa tipped to axe Mings after confirmed news – Agbonlahor

Steven Gerrard will not be afraid to “ruthlessly” substitute any of his Aston Villa players after 30 minutes if they are not performing.

That is the view of Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the impact of the reintroduction of five substitutes in the top flight.

The Premier League confirmed earlier this year (31 March) that clubs will be allowed to use five subs in the 2022-23 season.

It marks a return to the rule that was temporarily introduced when football resumed after the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 but was dropped at the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign.

“What’s good about the five subs is, if you’re not at it the manager knows you are coming off after 30 minutes,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I think managers should be ruthless now. If you’re not at it, after 30 minutes or at half-time, you’re off.

“He’s got five subs, you can leave two subs to the last 15 minutes and can make three subs at half-time. If you’re not at it, he’s got so much talent on the bench.

“With [Danny] Ings, [Ollie] Watkins, [Leon] Bailey, [Emiliano] Buendia, who is one fans like a lot, [Cameron] Archer will be itching to get into the side, there are so many players pushing for starts.

“If [Tyrone] Mings or [Diego] Carlos or [Matty] Cash or [Lucas] Digne, you’ve got Ashely Young to come in, [Ezri] Konsa and [Callum] Chambers will be waiting and feeling angry they are not starting.

“That’s what the manager wants. Gerrard will want options, he will want everyone to know even if you are captain or vice-captain, you are getting replaced if you are not at it.

“If that’s at half-time that’s going to push teams on this season, you’re going to get some really exciting games.”
