Aston Villa tipped to sign Mings replacement after source’s update – Whelan

Steven Gerrard will “know who he wants” as the Aston Villa boss targets an upgrade on Tyrone Mings this summer, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, bemoaned the 29-year-old’s lack of consistency in a Villa shirt.

An Aston Villa source told this site today (18 April) that Gerrard is in the market for a left-sided centre-back – casting new doubt on Mings’ future.

The club captain has not completely convinced the former Rangers boss, despite starting all but one match during his tenure.

Mings, who has earned 17 England caps, is out of contract in June 2024.

Whelan suggested a fresh face in defence could bring the best out of Mings.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s still an England international, isn’t he?

“It would be very difficult to let him go, I’m sure. He’s
a player who has been a real leader at the back, a captain.

“But at the same time, he’s been very inconsistent.
Sometimes we see the best of Tyrone Mings, but other times – we see a player
who is far from international quality.

“It’s been a mixed bag as far as he’s concerned. He could
benefit from having some real competition in his position.

“Gerrard knows who he wants. It’s his first real window, and he will be ruthless – both with incomings and outgoings.”

Mings signed for Aston Villa from Bournemouth for a reported potential fee of £25million in 2019.

Gerrard’s side sit 15th in the Premier League – 11 points clear of relegation danger.
