Aston Villa told to match Newcastle as new claim issued – pundit

Aston Villa must finish between eighth and 12th this season, according to Paddy Kenny.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers claimed Aston Villa should have similar ambitions to Newcastle United this term.

Steven Gerrard’s side were one of the busiest clubs at the beginning of the transfer window although there have been no incomings since the loan signing of Ludwig Augistinsson last month (11 July).

After finishing 14th in 2021-22, Villa have added three players to the first team squad and have also converted Philippe Coutinho and Robin Olsen’s loans into permanent deals for Ā£17million and Ā£3million, respectively.

Douglas Carlos moved from Sevilla for a Ā£26million fee while Boubacar Kamara has arrived on a free transfer from Marseille.

“I think they’ve got to be top-half,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Anything mid-table to top-half is progression, for me, when you’ve finished 14th.

“With all the players they’ve brought in and with no disrespect to Aston Villa, progression from last season, for now.

“It’s a club that’s trying to build. They finished 14th last season so anything between eighth and 12th would be progression, for me.

“That’s where they should be looking, a little bit like Newcastle.”

Despite being busy in the window, Aston Villa’s season got off to the worst-possible start with a 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Bournemouth on Saturday (6 August).

They are next in action when Frank Lampard’s Everton visit Villa Park next weekend (13 August).
