Aston Villa told to seal deal for defender after Gerrard’s transfer reveal – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has claimed Aston Villa need to strengthen their defensive options before the end of the transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, McAvennie said Steven Gerrard’s side have enough talent going forward but need need to tighten up defensively.

Villa lost their opening game of the 2022-23 Premier League season on Saturday (6 August).

They lost 2-0 to newly promoted Bournemouth.

As quoted by Birmingham Live (8 August), Gerrard revealed they will “continue to shape the squad” over the final weeks of the transfer window.

The Villans boss added that there are several players who could be leaving the squad in the coming weeks.

When asked where Villa needed to strengthen after the loss at the weekend, McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Charlotte Cohen: “They are scoring enough goals, they need to stop conceding them.

The first thing you have to do is stop letting goals in. Then that gives the team a chance to build their confidence.

Players can go forward and not worry about leaving themselves open at the back. That is where it starts. If you keep scoring goals but keep conceding thatā€™s not going to help anyone. It can knock the confidence of the strikers too.

I think theyā€™ve got enough talent, theyā€™ve got enough flair, they have got players who can keep the ball, they have now got to stop letting goals in.
