Ross Barkley could make his Aston Villa debut on Sunday in a very big match for his new club and for him personally.
The midfielder completed a season-long loan move to Villa Park from Chelsea on Wednesday.
It’s a potentially excellent move for the 26-year-old, whose career at Stamford Bridge was stagnating with manager Frank Lampard appearing to not have a role for him moving forward.
The player himself admitted he made the move in order to boost his chances of making it into the England squad for the rescheduled Euro 2020 finals next summer.
On completing his loan move, Barkley said: “The last couple of years I’ve been stop-start, performing well and then being out of the team.
“To come here and have the chance to play and perform regularly is a big thing for me. With the Euros at the end of the season, it’s a big target for me and hopefully I can be there.
“[Manager] Dean Smith swayed me with the way he spoke to me, and it looks like it’s going to be an exciting season.”
Barkley’s cup tied for Villa’s Carabao Cup clash at home to Stoke on Thursday, meaning he could make his Villans bow against an old enemy, Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a perfect start to the season, winning all their matches. However, so have Villa.
It’s the perfect opportunity for Barkley to prove his worth but should he get the nod from Smith, he’ll be determined to put in a good performance for other reasons.
He grew up an Evertonian, playing for the Toffees at youth level and the first eight years of his senior career.
Everton have also started with a bang, having won all three of their Premier League matches. So Barkley would be doing the club he supports a favour if he can help Villa get a result against the champions.
When he left Goodison Park, he joined Chelsea, another club who share a rivalry with the Reds.
And there’s nothing like putting in a good performance against a side you’ve been programmed to hate for years.
