Aston Villa well placed to beat Liverpool to Wilson signing – ‘Gerrard has first dibs’, says expert

Steven Gerrard could play a “massive” role in persuading Rangers wonderkid Rory Wilson to join Aston Villa.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 16-year-old striker could be swayed by the chance to follow the former Gers boss to Villa Park.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (28 March) that Rangers have offered Rory Wilson the most lucrative first-year professional deal in the club’s history.

An Ibrox source told this site that senior figures have tried to persuade the striker to stay – but the youngster has informed the club of his intention to depart.

According to the Scottish Sun (28 March), Aston Villa are set to beat off competition from Man United, Man City, and Liverpool to sign Wilson.

The report claims Rangers will be due around £300,000 in compensation.

Whelan suggested the “bond” between Gerrard and Wilson could be the driving force behind the move.

“You tend to find that many managers dip into their old club’s ranks,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It’s that trust, the familiarity, and the relationship Gerrard already has with that young man. It’s massive, and it was the same with Philippe Coutinho.

“You’ve got to have that kind of bond, and sometimes that can be the biggest part of a transfer.

“It seems like he has first dibs on signing him, ahead of the likes of City and Liverpool. Who knows, the chance to link up with Gerrard once again could just push things into Villa’s favour.”

Wilson has netted five goals in five games for Scotland’s under-17 side during their European Championship campaign.

The forward has notched 40 goals for Rangers youth teams this term.
