Aston Villa Women have been named as the Champions of the FA Women’s Championship via a basic points-per-game formula which determined that the club deserved promotion on sporting merit.

This comes after the season was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The side have been rewarded following their exceptional evolution across the last season, and promotion is exactly what they deserve after the long hours of training and performing on the pitch.

Amber Wildgust, the General Manager at the club, said:

“Since Christian Purslow arrived at Aston Villa, he has provided the support that we needed to make the club a force in the Women’s Game.

We have come such a long way in a very short space of time and promotion to the Super League is reward for the strides that have been made.”

Back in 2019, when Jodie Hutton became the first of a number of players to be rewarded with professional contracts – Purslow promised that the level of investment at the club would improve, a promise that was visibly kept over the summer – and also promised that the club would push to compete with the elite of British Women’s Football. The first steps have now been made in realising that dream.

Whilst the players and staff are now experiencing promotion, on the other hand, Liverpool Women have been relegated from the Women’s Super League. They have announced that they are disappointed at the way that the season has concluded and stated that they were looking forward to ‘attempting to secure their league status on the pitch’ when safe to do so.

Aston Villa Women finished with a 0.43 higher points per game than second placed Sheffield United Women – likely because of the side remaining unbeaten throughout the season.

Incredible news for the Aston Villa Women, and we can’t wait to follow them on their journey when the new Women’s Super League resumes.
