Noel Whelan has urged Aston Villa to be “sensible” with Diego Carlos’ return to action after a positive update on his injury recovery.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited the case of Patrick Bamford – who has been haunted by injury across the past two seasons.
Carlos has not featured for Aston Villa since he suffered an Achilles tendon injury in just his second Premier League appearance back in August.
It was initially feared that he would miss the entire 2022-23 campaign, but Birmingham Live claim the defender has joined his teammates in Dubai for their mid-season training camp – and could be back as early as the new year.
The former Sevilla star cost the Midlands giants a reported ÂŁ26million.
This site revealed on 3 November that Aston Villa have made Villarreal defender Pau Torres a top target as they continue to deal with Carlos’ absence.
When asked about a potential return in January, Whelan told Football Insiderâs Ewan Kingsbury: âYou canât take risks with players who have had a better-than-expected recovery like this.
âThis is the time where everything needs to be triple-checked to make sure everything is as it was with his body.
âItâs fantastic news to see him involved with the squad and pushing to come back, but youâve got to be sensible.
âThe last thing you want is any setbacks from rushing a player back. The Premier League is a very intense competition.
âAston Villa and the player have got to make sure there are no recurrences because weâve seen Patrick Bamford struggle with that at Leeds United.
âItâs imperative that this process is seen all the way through.”
