Bent reacts to Bertrand Traore capture

Darren Bent believes that new Aston Villa signing Bertrand Traore will be a big upgrade on the other wingers at Dean Smith’s disposal.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Villa and England striker claims that the likes of Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi “let them down” with their indifferent displays last season.

Villa confirmed the capture of the 25-year-old from Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday morning but he was ineligible for Saturday’s game against Sheffield United.

He joined the likes of Jack Grealish and Jota as other wide options currently on the club’s books.

Bent insists that Villa needed to improve on their goal-scoring record this season and suggests that Traore’s arrival can help solve the issue in attack.

Asked if Traore would offer an upgrade on Villa’s current wing options, Bent told Football Insider: “Yeah, they let them down – Traore struggled at Chelsea a little bit but did well at Lyon.

“If he can hit the ground running I think it will be a very good signing. They’ve had a lot – Trezeguet, El Ghazi, people like this – that have stepped in there and done okay but with Traore, you’ve got someone who’s played in the Champions League, good experience, who can score a goal.

“His goal-scoring record at Lyon wasn’t that bad and they need a lot of firepower because the one thing you’d say about Villa is that they didn’t score enough goals last season.  Adding (Ollie) Watkins and him, they’re good signings.”

Traore scored 33 goals in 126 appearances for Lyon, although only four of those strikes came last season.

He already has 10 games and two goals under his belt in the Premier League from his time at Chelsea.
