Bent urges Smith to bin Matt Targett

Darren Bent insists that Aston Villa need to replace Matt Targett as their first-choice left-back before the end of the transfer window.

The former Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 24-year-old is “a bit weak” after his first season at the club.

Targett joined the Villans from Southampton last summer for £14million and played 28 times in the Premier League under Dean Smith.

He sat out just four matches following his league debut in September, as Wales international Neil Taylor acted as backup to his new teammate.

Bent believes that the 31-year-old is good enough to act as backup for Villa next season but insists that Targett needs to be binned.

Bent told Football Insider: “I do believe they need two full-backs, do Villa. They’ve got Matty Cash in now and that’s a goodun but I’m not sold on Targett at all, I don’t think he’s good enough, I think he’s a bit weak.

“So for me I think they need a left back as well so I’m sure they’ll address that situation as well. I think Taylor’s good enough as a backup but I’m not quite sure, ambition-wise, if he’s the answer.

“Matty Cash, can get up and down, up and down, a really good full-back. I’m not quite sure on the other side they’re equally as strong.”

Targett has a total of 32 appearances under his belt for Villa to date, including in last season’s League Cup final.

He has played 71 times in the Premier League so far, while he also has 13 games under his belt for England’s under-21s.
