Bruce makes big Villa relegation claim as Bournemouth ponder legal action

Alex Bruce admitted he understands why Bournemouth and Watford will be feeling aggrieved, after Aston Villa secured Premier League survival on Sunday.

However, the former Premier League defender and son of ex-Villa boss Steve, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insisted the Villans had their fair share of bad decisions over the course of the season.

Sky Sports revealed that the Cherries board will meet later this week to discuss taking legal action against Hawk-Eye, after their failure to award a goal for Sheffield United during a 0-0 draw with Villa may have cost Eddie Howe’s side relegation.

Villa finished a place and a point ahead of Bournemouth in the table, thanks to a 1-1 draw at West Ham on the final day.

“Obviously that was a massive talking point,” Bruce told Football Insider.

“I can understand why Bournemouth and Watford are feeling aggrieved over them staying up on the back of that.

“Over the course of the season though, there were a few incidents where Villa were a little hard done to themselves.

“Listen, they got eight points in their last three games to survive, which was some going. So fair play to them for staying up.”

Hawk-Eye apologised for the goal-line technology system error after Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland carried the ball into his own side netting against the Blades.

Ultimately, even if the Blades had beaten Villa 1-0 that day, Dean Smith’s side would have beaten the drop on goals scored.

Relegation to the Championship has ended Bournemouth’s five-year stint in England’s top-flight.
