Former Everton Chief Speaks Out

Keith Wyness, the former CEO of Everton, has raised concerns about the compensation offered by Fifa to clubs for players injured while on international duty. Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness argues that European clubs, including West Ham, should demand more from the football governing body.

Injury Woes for West Ham

The issue comes to light following Niclas Fullkrug’s Achilles tendon injury while representing Germany. The striker, who joined West Ham for £27.5 million from Borussia Dortmund, has yet to make his league debut for the club and has missed six matches due to his injury.

Compensation Caps Leave Clubs Short

Currently, Fifa compensates West Ham approximately £17,000 for each day Fullkrug is sidelined, but this amount caps at around £6.3 million if he remains out for an entire year. Wyness highlights that this policy falls short, particularly for clubs managing high-wage players.

Insurance Policies Under Scrutiny

Wyness shared his experiences from his time at Aston Villa, noting that the insurance policies for injured players are inadequate. The coverage doesn’t begin until 28 days post-injury, leaving clubs to shoulder the immediate rehabilitation costs. With top players earning between £100,000 and £200,000 a week, the compensation offered is hardly sufficient.

Time for Change?

Wyness believes that organisations like FIFPro and the European Club Association (ECA) must hold Fifa accountable as they expand the football calendar. He stresses the need for a reassessment of how compensation is structured, especially as discussions about player burnout and stress continue to grow.

What’s Next for West Ham?

As West Ham navigates this challenging period without Fullkrug, the club is also looking towards potential new signings. O’Rourke has shared updates on West Ham’s pursuit of a ‘big-name signing’, adding to the intrigue surrounding the club’s future.
