Danny Mills predicts Aston Villa big name to be omitted v Leicester after Today reveal

Danny Ings will have to “be patient” and “wait for his chance” to dislodge Ollie Watkins at Aston Villa, according to Danny Mills.

The former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old former Southampton striker has “no divine right” to start against Leicester City on Sunday (5 December).

Speaking at his press conference yesterday (3 December), manager Steven Gerrard insisted he will give Ings “every chance” of making the squad, with a decision set to be made today (Saturday, 4 December).

Ings was sidelined with an injury setback as Aston Villa fell 2-1 at home against Manchester City on Wednesday (1 December).

In-form Watkins has spearheaded the attack in Ings’ absence across the last two fixtures.

Mills insisted the summer signing faces a struggle to displace the 25-year-old and is likely to start on the bench.

“There’s real competition for places at Aston Villa,” he told Football Insider‘s Connor Whitley.

“If Steven Gerrard is happy with what the rest of the
team are doing, then Ings may well have to be patient and wait for his chance
to come back in – that’s how football is.

“There’s no divine right for him to be back playing in
that side. If the team is doing well, the manager isn’t going to change it – it’s
easy for him because Villa are winning and playing well.

“He hasn’t really got an argument. Sometimes you have to be patient – there are 25 players in the squad, only 11 can play.”

Aston Villa

Watkins has netted twice in Gerrard’s first three games in charge at Aston Villa.

Ings joined the Midlands side in August for a reported £30million.
