Danny Mills has claimed it is “refreshing” to see Jesus Garcia Pitarch leave Aston Villa and insisted that too often managers pay the price for poor recruitment.
Villa confirmed that 56-year-old Pitarch, who is known as Suso, was sacked on Monday, just 24 hours after the club secured their Premier League status for another season.
The BBC reported increasing tension between Suso and chief executive Christian Purslow for the decision.
The sporting director was responsible for the signings of Wesley, who cost £21m, as well as Matt Targett, Marvelous Nakamba and Mbwana Samatta.
When asked by Football Insider if Suso’s exit was inevitable given his track record in the transfer market, Mills said: “It is refreshing to see that a sporting director go rather than a manager. Refreshing to see the people that are directly responsible for recruitment actually held accountable.
“The sporting director is responsible for the appointment of the manager, the recruitment of players and has a massive say in the style of play.
“He is the most important person at a football club. If he gets it wrong, surely he has to be culpable and accountable.”
The Claret and Blue spent over £140million last summer upon their return to the top flight of English football.
However, the majority of their signings have failed to have the desired impact in the Premier League and Suso has paid the price.
