Aston Villa are close to a breakthrough in talks to sign Alex Moreno and are also confident of completing a forward signing soon, sources have told Football Insider.
Manager Unai Emery has set his sights on the Spanish market to strengthen the Villa squad this month as he looks to bring in a new left-back and forward.
Talks are progressing over a deal for Real Betis’ Moreno, 29, and Villa are submitting a new bid for him to get the deal over the line.
It is expected to mean that one of Lucas Digne or Ludwig Augustinsson will end up leaving the club, although it is not clear who at this stage.
Villa are also working on signing a wide forward with Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze among the top targets.
Emery wants reinforcements after identifying the positions in the Villa squad that need strengthening in this window.
Football Insider revealed in October that the new manager would be given “huge” backing by the club’s ambitious owners this month.
Emery has made a strong start at Villa Park after replacing Steven Gerrard in the hot seat back in October.
In his first five league fixtures, the Spaniard has only lost to Liverpool, while Villa have picked up away wins against both Manchester United and Tottenham in that time.
Just shy of the halfway point in the Premier League, Villa now sit 11th in the table and will hope that a surge of January reinforcements will help them to break into the top half.
