Jamie Carragher has hailed Emiliano Martinez’s late stop as ‘the biggest turning point’ in Argentina’s World Cup victory.
The South Americans came out on top in a thrilling encounter that will go down in history as arguably the greatest showpiece event in football history.
France had more than their fair share of opportunities to win the competition with Kylian Mbappe in particularly impressive form with a stunning hat-trick at the match ended 3-3 after extra-time.
However the match only went as far as penalties due to a stunning late save from Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez to deny Randal Muani with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.
That save saw France wilt and Argentina rise in confidence, with Martinez feeling unbeatable as he prepared for the penalty shootout that they South Americans eventually won.
Liverpool legend Carragher was particularly impressed with what he saw in Qatar, Tweeting: “This game showed why football is the greatest game of all.
“This one is an all-time classic.
“So many twists & turns, but this save from Emi Martinez was the biggest turning point.”
Despite finding life difficult at Arsenal, the 30-year-old has really proven himself as one of the best goalkeepers on the planet since moving to Aston Villa.
Since moving to Villa Park in the summer of 2020, Martinez has already made 91 appearances for the club and has proved himself as one of the best shot-stoppers in the division.
But responding to a comment on Twitter, Carragher believes that former Villa goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler deserves real credit for helping him to find his form.
Cutler left the club in October this year, leading Martinez to post a tribute to the 46-year-old, saying: “I can’t thank you enough for the way you helped me since day one.
“Not just a goalkeeping coach to me, you became my friend.
“Unfortunately football isn’t fair sometimes but I’m sure you will find the right club for you. Best English coach by miles.”
However after seeing his World Cup victory, Cutler paid tribute to the star, saying: “What a guy, so proud. Champions of the world!”
