England Euro 2020 squad: Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and James Maddison competing for one spot with Declan Rice and Mason Mount ‘certain starters’

Phil Foden has been lauded as a generational talent by Troy Deeney, but the Watford striker believes he is competing with Jack Grealish and James Maddison for one starting spot in the England team.

Gareth Southgate is blessed with some excellent attacking options heading into this summer’s rescheduled European Championship.

Phil Foden has played for England’s senior team five times

Mason Mount making a strong case to be a regular starter, scoring in a 2-0 win over Albania, while Manchester City’s Foden often provides a spark when he plays.

Jesse Lingard has just returned to the fold after hitting a brilliant streak of form on loan at West Ham, while James Maddison and Jack Grealish are also in contention – only missing out on the latest internationals through injury.

The quality in the England ranks is the best it’s been for some time and talkSPORT regular Deeney offered his assessment on the options that Southgate has at his disposal.

Jack Grealish will be competing with Foden et al for a place in the England squad

“Mount is always looking to go forward, he’s so positive. He brings you that variety as well,” Deeney told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“In the last game against Sheffield United, he started off as the ten, then went out to the left, then a nine and went as the eighth in the same game. He’s just got that much versatility.

“I’m a bit unsure if he’ll start, but he’s certainly making a case for it this season.

“I put them in the same bracket, Foden, Maddison, Grealish, they’re all playing for the same kind of role.

“I wouldn’t put any of them as a starter. I think Foden is an unbelievable talent, he’s generational.

“Is he going to let you down defensively from a manager’s perspective? The biggest question is who are you going to take out to put him in?”

England’s selection against Albania initially raised a few eyebrows with ‘two CDMs’ trending on Twitter before the game.

Deeney believes there was no need for two holding midfielders against opposition like Albania, but will be more likely against the better teams.

“There’s no need to have two holding midfielders, especially if you look at the last two games,” Deeney said.

“If you look at the better teams, I think you’ll always see the two. The question will be if Jordan Henderson can make it and be fit.

“Mount has certainly got the legs. You’re looking at [Kalvin] Philips at Leeds as well, he’s got the legs and nastiness as well.

“Declan is going to be the one who is a constant. He’s grown and grown and is a wonderful human being.

“I think it’ll be interesting to see how he does at the Euros and if that solidifies someone from the top clubs going ‘right, we’re going to pay the £50m-£60m to go and get him.”

Mason Mount was on form for England against Albania

Danny Murphy was in agreement with Deeney about Mount and believes he should be in the England team ahead of Jack Grealish.

“It would take someone with a very different view on football to sit across from me and tell me why Mason Mount shouldn’t be playing in the Chelsea team,” Murphy told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

“It would take someone to see something I can’t see. He’s obviously superb, I’d have Mason Mount ahead of Jack Grealish.

“Mason Mount, in terms of what you want for England, against any opposition, ticks every box.

“Everything you want as a manager and fan he gives and he’s only gong to get better.”
