Everton news: Bent reacts as approach made for Villa ace Mings

Darren Bent claims that Everton could sign Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings as a replacement for Mason Holgate this summer.

The former Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, admits he does not think the Toffees need another centre-back unless Carlo Ancelotti is going to change system.

As revealed by Football Insider, Everton have made an approach to sign the 27-year-old this summer, with Villa knowing they could be forced to cash in if they are relegated.

This site also revealed back in June that Manchester City are plotting a raid to raid Goodison Park to sign Holgate this summer.

Bent believes that Mings could be signed as a replacement for the versatile defender and also touted a potential change of tactics if the current Toffee does not leave.

Bent told Football Insider: “I think he’s done alright, it’s been tough for him at times, as it has been for all the Villa defenders.

“Everton would be a good stepping stone but then who’s missing out because, to be fair, I wasn’t his biggest fan before but he’s defended well until Everton went through this crazy spell – Michael Keane.

“He had a ropey start but he’s come back. I also like Mason Holgate, he’s the one I do really like, and he’s already been linked with some big clubs. If they’re going to bring Mings in to replace Holgate, fair enough.

“I don’t know how Ancelotti would accommodate them all – unless he changes style and goes to a back three, then potentially he could go with Keane, Mings and Holgate. Mings, I think it would be a good move for him.”

Mings has played 34 times across all competitions for Villa this season, while he also picked up his first two England caps late in 2019.

Holgate meanwhile has become a mainstay for Ancelotti at centre-back, but he will miss the rest of the season due to a serious injury blow.

In other Everton news, Football Insider pundit was blown away by a Toffees loanee in midweek.
