Paddy Kenny can’t believe Robin Olsen is in talks to join Aston Villa permanently.
The former Leeds United stopper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, was left less than impressed with the goalkeeper earlier this season.
On 21 April, this site revealed Villa are in talks to sign Olsen on a permanent basis.
The 32-year-old moved to Villa Park on loan for the remainder of the season on 18 January.
He spent the first half of the season on loan at Sheffield United but failed to impress ex-Blades stopper Kenny, with him telling this site on 14 January he was “sitting on the bench doing nothing”.
When asked if he was surprised by possible permanent move, Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “Yeah, definitely.
“I watched him when he was on loan at Sheffield United and I remember thinking, ‘he’s miles off it’.
“Listen, whether it’s because he hadn’t had enough game time, or something else, I don’t know.
“He was very poor in the games I saw him in. As soon as he was dropped to the bench, Sheff U started getting a few wins.
“He was costing us games and goals. I find it a surprise that he might move to Villa.
“Is it because he’s the Swedish number one? I don’t know but fair play to him.”
Olsen has been named on the bench 11 times by Gerrard but is yet to make his debut for the club.
He made 11 appearances for Everton during a loan spell at Goodison Park in the 2020-21 campaign.
